smc (☆12): The Scream has been the target of several high-profile art thefts. In 1994, the version in the National Gallery was stolen. It was recovered several months later. In 2004, The Scream and Madonna were stolen from the Munch Museum. Both paintings were recovered in 2006. They had sustained some damage and went back on display in May 2008, after undergoing restoration

Tanuj (☆-1): What makes 'The Scream' more potent than 'The Dead Mother', also by Munch? The man (or woman?) in 'The Scream' is, in essence, unidentifiable, which conversely allows association at a broader level. The screaming (?) girl in 'The Dead Mother' is a little child who we know, through the title of the painting itself, is aggrieved by death, and more specifically, the death of her mother. It is, then, the vague haunting, not attributable to a specific person that lends power to 'The Scream'
