Expressionism

Expressionism emerged in different artistic circles across Europe, its highpoint being in the period 1905 to 1920. It was not a distinct, self-contained movement but used strong color, distorted figures, and sometimes abstraction to explore themes of belonging and alienation. Art from other eras, for instance the work of Fancis Bacon, can be referred to, quite correctly, as 'expressionistic' in a more general sense.
