Fauvism

The term 'Fauve', meaning 'wild beasts', was originally used disparagingly in 1905 by conservative art critic Louis Vauxalles. The artists he was criticizing appropriated his term to celebrate their own sense of creative freedom. Many modern artists have used ‘wild’ color but the term 'Fauve' is only applied to a small group of artists, mostly friends, working in France between 1898 and 1908.
